HIV warning to women using injectable contraception
Women who rely on injectable contraception are being strongly advised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to also use condoms to protect them against the increased risk of HIV infection.
A study in the Lancet last October found that women living in Aids-hit countries using progestogen-only injections, such as Depo-Provera, were twice as likely to become HIV positive as other sexually active women.
woo woo important information for people with uteruses who aren’t necessarily women that isn’t for all women because not all women have uteruses alright y’all let’s not be cissexist next time
Whilst i of course agree that not all those with uteruses are women & not all women have uteruses, i think it’s unfair to characterise this news story and/or the quote from it as cissexist because all it’s doing is recounting what’s happened:
The facts of the story are that the WHO did issue a warning to women using injectable contraceptives via family planning services in HIV-endemic areas and that the Lancet study was of women using those sort of contraceptives. Perhaps the WHO should have issued the warning to people with uteruses who are using injectable contraceptives in HIV-endemic areas, but that’s another matter. And my guess is that non-women in HIV-discordant heterosexual couples using injectable contraceptives in HIV-endemic areas (in this case, 7 African countries) were hard to come by to include in the longditudinal study.
